Schachter is one of the heroes of musical analysis, and his collected writings explain Schenkerian analysis better than any of the existing textbooks in English on the subject. Joseph N. Straus, a scholar of high standing, is well placed to put this book together."—William Drabkin, University of Brand: Oxford University Press, USA. Neumeyer and Susan Tepping, A Guide to Schenkerian Analysis [Englewood Cliffs: Prentice Hall, ]). This book, mangled as it was by a lack of copy-editing attention from the publisher, also attempts to overcome the gap between Schenkerian pedagogy and form-and-analysis, but in quite a different.

A guide throughout Schenkerian analysis of traditional tonal music, using a contemporary multi-levelled hierarchy to show interaction of structure and motion in music. Details the link between Schenkerian analysis and traditional methods of analysis of form in : Eric Wierzbicki. Schenkerian Analysis was published in , it effectively had the textbook market to itself for a decade (a much older book by Felix Salzer and a new translation of one by Oswald Jonas not withstanding).2 A relatively compact Guide to Schenkerian Analysis, by David Neumeyer and Susan Tepping, was issued in .

Schenkerian Analysis is a form of musical-structural analysis that iteratively reduces the structure of a piece of music to an increasingly simple melodic line. The piece is viewed as consisting of multiple "layers" -- foreground, middle-ground, and background -- each consisting of successively less detail. I really hate to break it to you, but Schenkerian analysis is practically impossible to self-study. TBH, I think the Cadwallader/Gagné text is the best one out there, but as you point out, it has its flaws. It is difficult to get into. The reason I say it's practically impossible is because Schenkerian analysis is an art.
